The Gothic Period



The Gothic style begun in the twelveth century, and has as base the Romanesque style. In this period France had become a commercial center, and many cathedrals with Gothic style were constructed with the donations of mercantile interests. The Gothic style had become, in the thirteenth century, the Universal style in all Europe, this was the first french style used in all europe.

The Gothic style has as the most important example the church of Saint-Denis, near Paris, built between 1137 and 1144. But there are also more churches with this style in Noyon, Senlis, Sens, Reims, Rouen and Laon, the Amiens Cathedral, the Sainte-Chapelle, and the Chartres Cathedral was rebuilt in this period because of a fire.
