Explore Avignon![]() Palais des Papes The construction of this palace occured in the period of pope Benedict XII, when Avignon became for a while in the Vatican of the north, is the most famous Christian palace and is located in the Historic Center of Avignon, an UNESCO World Heritage site. ![]() Tour Philippe le Bel This tower was built in the 13th century by Philippe the Fair. In that time it was an Avignon bridge used as a gateway to the kingdom of France. If you get the top of this tower you will see a magnificent landscape of the city.
Musée Lapidaire This is a Baroque style museum, was constructed in the 17th century and in that times it was a Jesuit church. Now it offers to visitors a variety of statues and sculptures of various civilizations that have cultivated Provence. The exhibition is a bit scary but that's history too.
Musée Requien This Museum is located next to the Musée Calvet, is a very famous botanical museum, with more than 200,000 specimens from all over the world. There are also paintings done in Avignon in the 15th century and Roman and Gothic sculptures. ![]() Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms Next to the Palais des Papes is located the Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms, this is a 19th century building and here are the rests of some of the popes that once lived in Avignon. At the top of the cathedral is a statue of the Virgin from the 19th century. |
