Paris HistoryIn 1800 Napoleon was declared first consul and under his rule Paris became in to a military power and in May 1804 was declared Emperor by himself, Napoleon fought with British, Austrian and Russian but unfortunately was defeated by the Russian and Austrian, on 31 March 1814 Paris was invaded by them, it was the first time the city had been conquered by a foreign army. On 25 July 1830 Charles X (1824-1830) dissolved the Chamber of Deputies and restricted voting rights to the landed gentry only, but he was forced to abdicate some time later and was replaced by Louis-Philippe. ![]() The Industrial Revolution in Paris meant an increase in its population, more than any other city in France and the third largest city in the world, the city began to grow not only in population but also in the construction of monumental buildings such as the Arc of Triomphe and the Eglise du Dome, but in 1831 a cholera epidemy reduced the population from 900,000 to 19,000 inhabitants. Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, the nephew of the late Emperor was elected in 1848, and also was declared as the Emperor Napoleon III by himself. In 1870 Napoleon declared the war on Prussia, but was defeated, captured and abdicated on September 4 with a Third Republic. On 19 September the Prussian army arrived at Paris and the Louvre then turned into a militar center, the starvation was big those days and there were no other choice for people than eating the meat of animals, dogs, cats and rats dishes were prepared. After the terrible Third Republic new times were coming for Paris and in 1889 the Eiffel Tower were constructed, the Moulin Rouge was famous for its shows and the metro system was inaugurated in 1900. In 1981 François Mitterrand was elected and occured some changes in the politics and in the city's appearance, the Louvre was redeveloped and the famous glass piramid was built, the Opéra Bastille and Bibliotheque Nationale de France were also constructed. In 2001 was elected Bertrand Delanoë, the first major declared openly gay. The last considerable construction of Delanoë is the southern "boulevard of the marshals". « Back to Paris History |
